A couple of weeks ago Dame Bullhead and I visited "Head of Steam" - not the pub outside Euston station (though we've been there too, somewhat more frequently), but the rebranded Darlington North Road Station museum. Although it's decidedly less glamorous than, for instance, the NRM I thought it was really very enjoyable - as well as Locomotion, "Derwent", Tennant 1463 and the Q7, it has a very satisfying mixture of other exhibits and succeeds in preserving the atmosphere of this lovely old station. Dame Bullhead particularly enjoyed the lovingly restored Victorian karzis. The only slightly sad note is the dismal sight of infrequent Northern Trains Pacers calling at the adjacent platform (I'd have thought that travelling in the old S&D coach preserved in the museum would be preferable than one of those things) - but at least the line's still open, at any rate, and provides a way of getting to the museum without driving.

Worth a visit if you're in the area. Here's their website - Head of Steam
