I wish to buy or to borrow a copy of this book - or as a minimum to have photocopies of some of the contents. If you are able to assist then please contact me through gbeare <<at>> waitrose <<dot>> com.

Thank you, Graham Beare, Basingstoke

Hello Graham,

Did you find Michael Harris' Gresley standard coaches book you were looking for?

In fact I accidently bought 2 copies at the time, and am willing to sell one of them.

Leen Verkaik,
Holland.

Different book.

The one in question currently has 3 copies on Amazon Marketplace between £100 and £156. I guess the £100 copy is a bit of a bargain. :lol:

Wish I could find a copy at 25 quid.

Simon.

Not the same book as in the original request, which is for a copy of 3. below...

There are three different books, complicated slightly by changes in publisher:

1. Gresley's Coaches - Coaches Built for GNR, ECJS and LNER 1905-53, David & Charles 1973. This has comparatively more information on the earlier GN and ECJS stock and also self-propelled stock. (I got a decent copy (with dustjacket) in a shop in Sheringham last September for just £8-50);

2. LNER Carriages, Atlantic (amongst others) 1994. Less on the earlier stock, more detail on the remainder, however consequently the chapter on self-propelled stock is omitted;

3. LNER Standard Gresley Carriages, Mallard (Michael Harris' own imprint) 1998. This provides photos, notes and construction details together with the standard official diagrams for each type of carriage to c1931. It was the intention to produce a second volume containing the remaining diagrams but Michael Harris sadly did not live long enough to achieve this. It's an outstanding suggestion from some members that the second volume should be produced by the LNER Study Group.

Do not forget that the Isinglass drawings also contain a wealth of prototype data in addition to the drawings with most types covered, and there's also Nick Campling's book of drawings plus various articles that have appeared in the press over the years, both prototype and model.

Finally, copies of all three can be obtained through local libraries, either from stock or by inter-library loan. It is not necessary to feed the flea-bay vultures...

There is also Great Northern Railway and East Coast Joint Stock Carriages from 1905 (Oakwood 1995) which is a very useful volume in its own right and has some information which the others don't, such as GNR interior colour schemes.

I didn't know about the proposal to publish the second volume of Standard Gresley Carriages but I'm wholly in favour of it.

And to prove you really don't need to feed the vultures, I picked up a copy of LNER Carriages at Middlesbrough Show this May for £6. I sold it on for the same amount, I might add, thus retaining my integrity despite the temptation.....

A year or so ago I bought LNER Carriages for £55, which I thought at the time was a bit steep but nevertheless I wanted it so I bought it...

Now, however, AbeBooks have one copy for £100, which makes my purchase seem like a bargain, together with 2 of the later 1998 publication at £125 and £156.

Those who managed to buy the 1973 1st edition of Gresleys Coaches for single figures did well, mine cost £31 earlier this year, but no :( because to me it was worth having.

According to an Amazon search, a paperback reprint of this book is being published in January 2011.

It is available for pre-order at £16.96.

No it isn't, it's LNER Carriages that is being reprinted - see my earlier post detailing the different books. However a reprint of this will be good news and frustrate the fleabay vultures:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LNER-Carriages- ... 430&sr=1-2

Curiously Ian Allan lists it as already published last March: http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/lner-carriages.html

The publisher is Noodle. LNER Standard Gresley Carriages was self-published by Michael Harris under his own Mallard Books imprint; presumably ownership and copyright rests with his estate.

I have a copy of LNER Carriages (not the title in the OP, the blue and white book) available to the first member to PM. You can have it for what it cost me, which was a tenner. Plus postage if applicable.
